Introduction | Glyphosate has been registered in more than 130 countries and is the herbicide with the largest production, usage and sales in the world. Described by some as an "almost ideal" herbicide, a once-in-a-century discovery, glyphosate is as important to reliable global food production as penicillin is to the treatment of human disease. However, in March 2015, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) under the World Health Organization classified glyphosate as a compound "probably carcinogenic to humans" (Group 2A) based on epidemiological, animal and in vitro studies. Carcinogenic sites in humans: Leukemia and/or lymphoma with limited evidence. |
Technical and Preparations | Original drug: 90%, 93%, 95%, 96%, 97%. Formaldehyde is required to be ≤1.2 g/kg and nitrosoglyphosate is ≤1.0 mg/kg (GB/T 12686-2017). Commonly used preparations and dosage forms: 30%, 41%, 46% water; 30%, 50%, 65% soluble powder; 50%, 58%, 70%, 75.7% soluble granules. |
Use type | Herbicides, crop desiccants |
Main targets & applications | To control weeds and miscellaneous irrigation in fire isolation zones, the dosage of pesticides is 1 950~2 437.5 g/hm2; for non-arable land and weeds, the dosage is 1 170~1 462.5 g/hm2. Spray on stems and leaves. To control annual weeds in summer corn fields, spring corn fields, winter rapeseed fields (no-till), and cotton fields, the dosage is 750~1650 g/hm2 inter-row directional stem and leaf spray. To control annual and some perennial weeds in citrus orchards, sisal orchards, pear orchards, apple orchards, mulberry orchards, banana orchards, rubber orchards, and tea gardens, the dosage is 1 125~2 250 g/hm2 directional stem and leaf spray. To control annual weeds in no-tillage spring rapeseed fields and no-tillage late rice fields, the dosage is 1 500~2 550 g/hm2 stem and leaf spray. |
The way of action | Annihilation, systemic conduction |
Mode of action | 5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase (EPSPS) inhibitor. |
Resistance | International Herbicide Resistance Action Committee/Weed Science Society of America HRAC/WSSA Group 9. When the first genetically modified crops such as corn, canola, soybeans and cotton were introduced in the 1990s, glyphosate-resistant weeds had not yet been discovered. By 2014, glyphosate-resistant weeds dominated herbicide resistance research, with 23 resistant weed species discovered in 18 countries, often referred to as "superweeds." The most common resistant weeds are cowweed, crabgrass, multifloral ryegrass, straight ryegrass, white winegrass, sweetgrass, ragweed, kochia, bluegrass, windmill, orangutan grass, false sorghum, Fructus alba, small fleabane, and Palmer amaranth, among others. |
Toxicity and antidotes | China's pesticide toxicity classification: slightly toxic. The reason is that there is no shikimic acid metabolic pathway in higher animals. World Health Organization pesticide hazard classification: III (mild hazard). Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS) Acute toxicity hazard category of chemicals: 5 (may be harmful if swallowed). |
Toxicology & Fate | Acute toxicity: Oral LD50 (mg/kg): rat 4 230, mouse > 10 000, goat 3 500. Rat transdermal LD50 >5 000 mg/kg. It is irritating to the eyes, non-irritating to the skin, and non-sensitizing to the skin of guinea pigs. Rat 4 h inhalation LC50 >4.98 mg/L (air). Chronic toxicity: maximum no effect dose (NOEL), 2-year feeding test, rats 410 mg/(kg · d); 1-year dog feeding 500 mg/(kg · d) (maximum treatment dose). It is non-mutagenic, non-teratogenic, non-neurotoxic, and has no adverse effects on reproduction. Ecotoxicity: Acute oral LD50 of bobwhite quail >3 851 mg/kg. The LC50 (5 d) of quail and duck feed is >4 640 mg/kg. Fish LC50 (96 h): rainbow trout 86, bluegill sunfish 120, clownfish 168, bass >1 000 mg/L. Daphnia LC50 (48 h): 780 mg/L. The biomass effective medium concentration EbC50 (72 h) of Crescentia capricornus is 485 mg/L, EbC50 (7 d) 13.8 mg/L, and the effective medium concentration ErC50 (72 h) of growth rate is 460 mg/L. The EC50 (96 h) of Skeletonema costa is 1.3 mg/L, and the EC50 (7 d) is 0.64 mg/L. EC50 (7 days) of Navicula is 42 mg/L, and Anabaena bloom is 15 mg/L. Shrimp and crab LC50 (96 h): mysid shrimp > 1 000, grass shrimp 281, violin crab 934 mg/L. The EC50 of sea urchin (96 h) is > 1 000 mg/L, the EC50 of duckweed (14 h) is 25.5 mg/L, and the EC50 of tadpole (48 h) is 111 mg/L. Bee LD50 (48 h) contact or oral administration ≥0.100 mg/bee. Glyphosate preparations have no effect on carabid beetles. No or minor damage to lacewings, spiders and mites. Inflicts moderate damage to beetles. Fate: Glyphosate is rapidly excreted by mammals after oral ingestion and does not bioaccumulate. The main metabolite in plants is aminomethylphosphonic acid. Soil strongly adsorbs glyphosate and quickly combines with iron, aluminum and other metal ions in the soil and loses its activity. If glyphosate contaminates surface water, it does not break down easily by water or sunlight. Soil and climate conditions affect the persistence of glyphosate in soil, with a half-life of 2-197 days. Photolysis occurs in natural water with a half-life of 33-77 days; photodegradation does not occur in soil for 31 days. The half-life of glyphosate in water ranges from 12 days to 10 weeks. The main degradant in soil and water is also aminomethylphosphonic acid. |
