| Introduction | Glyphosate has been registered in more than 130 countries and is the herbicide with the largest production, usage and sales in the world. Described by some as an "almost ideal" herbicide, a once-in-a-century discovery, glyphosate is as important to reliable global food production as penicillin is to the treatment of human disease. However, in March 2015, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) under the World Health Organization classified glyphosate as a compound "probably carcinogenic to humans" (Group 2A) based on epidemiological, animal and in vitro studies.
